The first stage begins with the words you need in Croatia from the very first moment: bog, dobar dan, do viđenja, molim, hvala and nema na čemu. That already makes you a polite guest before the holiday has properly started.
Next comes getting to know people: giving your name, asking for someone’s name – once informally, once in the polite form – and apologising when you have bumped into somebody in a crowd.
