The days of the week need the same treatment as the numbers: a numbered filing system, so you not only know the sounds but also which day is the third or the fifth. Here it is the tree list: 01 a tree, 02 a lamp, 03 a three-legged stool, 04 a car with four wheels, 05 the hand with five fingers, 06 a die with six faces, 07 the seven dwarfs.
First the German days move in: behind the tree stands the moon for Montag, at the lamp a servant for Dienstag, the stool is sawn through the middle for Mittwoch, the car thunders past for Donnerstag, with your hand you go to the swimming pool because you are free for Freitag, on the die there is sand for Samstag, and the seven dwarfs are sunbathing for Sonntag. With that you could teach a child the days of the week in a few minutes.
Then Croatian joins in. Under the tree stands a pony in the fog with a dent in its jacket – ponedjeljak. The lamp hangs in the underground, with a piece of toast and a rocket on the floor – utorak. On the stool sits somebody singing so badly that everyone runs away – srijeda. In the car it flies past like a chat, confusing and rather run down – četvrtak. In your hand you hold a plastic bottle and beat time with it – petak. The die falls under the bed, you search and find a boat and a cup – subota. And the seven dwarfs end up in the fog, get a dent in the head and say that is what comes of it – nedjelja.
Two coincidences help as well: petak contains pet for five, and Friday is the fifth day; četvrtak contains četiri for four, and Thursday is the fourth. Write the seven images down and tell somebody about them – with the days of the week the effort really pays off.
