In August it is so hot that it feels like sitting on coals. You loosen your clothing, and moss is growing on your waistcoat. Coal, loosening (lockern in German), waistcoat and moss give you kolovoz.
Here the heat is both the anchor for the month and the beginning of the Croatian word.
