Nǐ huì shuō yīngyǔ ma? means “Do you speak English?” – the last sentence of the taster course.
You are by the Nile again, flowing softly along: nǐ. Behind it stands a cow with very soft fur – that gives you huì. An alien puts a hedgehog on the cow’s back, and its spines are sharp: the hedgehog gives you shuō, the spines the falling tone. The hedgehog is wearing shoes whose soles are as straight as the horizon, and it is a little tight, evenly tight: that gives you yīngyǔ. Finally a police van with soft suspension pulls up, your mum at the wheel, staring steadily at the horizon – ma, level.
That brings the taster course to an end. You have ten sentences – and, more importantly, the principle that carries the tones along from the very start.
