The first sentence in the taxi: ¿Está libre?
You walk up to a taxi and see branches with a cup on them on the passenger seat – the driver is evidently having a coffee (está). You ask whether he is free, and he wants to know why: because the light on top is on (libre). If you want to be polite, add por favor.
